In today’s Halo Infinite Set Review I am excited to be breaking down a set which revisits one of the classic Halo vehicles and changes it in unique and interesting ways.
Warthog Rally is a 314 piece, pro-builders set which has been designed for fans ages eight and up, and the set retails for around £29.99/$29.99. The set includes a build of the 343-era Warthog, a Master Chief figure in his new Halo Infinite armour, a new UNSC Marine, and two Jackal Freebooters.
The set also features a 2-in-1 building option, allowing you to build a boat instead of the Warthog - but that is not something which we will be touching on in today’s post.
Looking first at the build of the Warthog itself, it is safe to say that is is a wonderfully innovative piece of constructions which pulls the bet techniques and ideas from previous Mega products and builds upon them in new and innovative ways.
This rendition of the ‘hog most closely resembles the 2553 model of the M12 Light Reconnaissance Vehicle, meaning it packs in a ton of details which are most prevalent with the design of the vehicle commonly dubbed the ‘343 era’ version. This means that this build has a much more rugged and utilitarian look to it - with an assortment of roll-bar elements and extrusions added to the body of the vehicle to make it feel truly fitting for an off-roading beast. Features like the water tanks on the back are present here as well, and the vehicle also features the singular light on the top of the seating compartment which this particular variant tends to boast.
Touching on the light here leads me nicely into talking about the build overall - as this is a build which feels incredibly innovative when the ‘hog is compared to it’s peers. The light is a fantastic example of this as it highlights perfectly how Mega have grown and expanded their parts inventory significantly, with a Call of Duty weapon sling piece used here for the cabling of the light. This means that the cable is a lot less thicker, and so therefore this ‘hog does not have the problems that similar variants like the Warthog Resistance set have when it comes to placing figures in the seats. Overall the build feels a lot more slender and smoother here too - with curvature used on the hood to good effect. Additional detailing is also added to the sides, interior, and even to the small engine details visible under the windscreen - all of which help to make this ‘hog feel more rugged.
The brand new pieces introduced here help to make this set feel a lot more akin to what we see within the games - with a fun effect where pressing down on the roof of the vehicle creates a similar suspension effect to that we see when placing a Warthog in Halo’s Forge mode. Although I am on the fence about the overall ruggedness of the suspension system here (lots of individual clip pieces are used underneath the chassis), I do believe that this is a great and innovative way to evolve the suspension of Warthog builds even further.
Overall, the ‘hog feels big, intimidating and beefy - everything you want from this design. Of course the build is just one part of the set, however, and the killer assortment of figures help to sell this as a wonderful addition to any Halo fan’s collection.
The fantastic build here is complimented by a wonderful assortment of micro action figures which really help to make this a wonderfully engaging play-set. Front and centre is the Master Chief, who comes in a gorgeous olive colour scheme and also comes packing the brand-new sculpt of the MA40 Assault Rifle, complete with removable ammo counter. This figure looks fantastic - with some really great paint applications for the 117 on the chest, as well as the outline of the visor, and some great detail for the clasps on Chief’s torso armour.
Chief is joined by the wonderful new Marine design here - presenting arguably our closest look the UNSC Army Troopers seen in Halo Reach. This figure is perfect. I love the colours for the BDU here, and think the armour has some intricate details which look great. The Helmet has a lot of detail, and the removable nature of the new helmets means interchangeability is key with these new figures. I also love the variety added by the short-sleeve BDU here. If these Marines were a little bit shorter, in line with the older figures, then I feel they would be better - but overall, the new Marine design is stunning.
Lastly, we have the Jackal Freebooter - a new version of the Jackal which seems to take us back closer to the old-school design for the Kig-Yar. Whilst I wasn’t a fan of this figure in the original preview pictures, I have to admit I really like it here! The details on the new armour are fantastic, and the new dimensions on the figure make it feel a lot more slender and agile, like the Jackals we see in the games. The square hole on the head also suggests the potential for a Jackal Sniper in the future - something which has me VERY excited.
So, overall this is a wonderful set with some great figures and a fantastic build! I really recommend picking this one up if you see it - as at $30 you really can’t go wrong.
