SUMMARY

In an attempt to develop a program similar in effectiveness to the Spartan-II program but at lower cost, the Spartan-III program is green-lit in 2531.  To ensure total secrecy, the project is headed on an uncharted planet known as Onyx.  Over the course of the next twenty years, the Spartan-III program creates nearly one-thousand Spartan-III super-soldiers and uses them on many suicidal missions behind enemy lines to try and turn the tide of the war.  Though effective, nearly all of both Alpha and Beta company are killed, leaving only Gamma company, who is still in training as of 2552.

After the events of the Battle of Installation 04, the Forerunner facilities located on Onyx were woken up by the destruction of Alpha Halo.  Around the same time, Doctor Catherine Halsey and a Covenant fleet arrive in the system and begin investigating the planet.  After a battle, Doctor Halsey contacts Earth, which was already under siege by the Covenant, and requests as many Spartan-IIs as possible to help investigate the Forerunner facilities for advanced technology.

Though the Spartan-IIs arrive in the form of Fred-104Kelly-087, and Linda-058, the Covenant force proves too powerful and the UNSC forces are forced to retreat into the heart of the Forerunner facility on Onyx.  They successfully reach the entrance via a slipspace portal, and close it off to Covenant entry, protecting them but also trapping them within a slipspace bubble.
