The Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) orchestrated a covert plan to remove Kurt from active duty while maintaining the illusion of his disappearance. Tasked with overseeing the training of Spartan-III candidates, Kurt was the ideal choice for this role. During his tenure as a mentor, he adopted the surname Ambrose and dedicated twenty-one years to training three separate Spartan-III companies.
Fate took an unexpected turn when it was revealed that the entire planet of Onyx concealed a profound secret – it was a Forerunner shield world. This revelation came to light following the activation of Delta Halo during the Battle of Installation 05. Kurt, alongside fellow Spartans, Dr. Catherine Halsey, and Franklin Mendez, embarked on a daring mission to thwart an impending Forerunner assault. Their journey led them to a Dyson sphere known as the Sarcophagus, accessible through a slipspace rift at Onyx's core.
In a selfless act of valor, Kurt chose to remain behind to protect the slipspace rift from Covenant forces until it fully closed, safeguarding humanity from an imminent threat. This courageous act cost him his life but ensured the safety of others.
