The Librarian was a Forerunner Lifeshaper and the wife of the Didact.
HOMEWORLD: Unknown
BORN: Prior to 108,445 BCE
DIED: 97,445 BCE
ANCIENT HISTORY
The Librarian, born First-Light-Weaves-Living-Song, was an influential Forerunner, rising to the top of the Lifeworker rate known as Lifeshaper, where she remained for over 10,000 years. Despite being of different rates, she married the Didact early in her life, and remained married until the firing of the Halo Array. The Librarian was vital in establishing wildlife preserves on the Halo Array and the Ark, fighting with the Master Builder for centuries to ensure there was a place to store all the species of the galaxy if and when the Halo Array wiped out all life from the galaxy. Though she primarily worked behind the scenes throughout her life, she was perhaps the most influential Forerunner who ever lived.
~107,445 BCE - 106,445 BCE
After the emergence of the Flood on ancient human worlds around 107,445 BCE, human civilization was desperate to expand their territory away from Flood-controlled regions of space. As part of this expansion, humans clashed with Forerunner-populated worlds, sparking a war between the two species.
~106,498 BCE - 106,445 BCE
The Battle of Charum Hakkor was one of the final battles of the Human-Forerunner Wars and also one of the largest, spanning over fifty years and likely consuming millions of lives.
~98,395 BCE
The end of the Human-Forerunner War, along with the political fight afterwards that led to the Exile of the Didact, spurred much debate within Forerunner leadership about the right course of action to defend civilization and the galaxy against the Flood, should they return.
~97,745 BCE - 97,445 BCE
The Forerunner-Flood War was a military engagement between the Forerunner species and the Flood that took place over approximately three-hundred years from 97,745 BCE until 97,445 BCE.
~97,445 BCE
The Battle of the Greater Ark was one of the final battles of the Forerunner-Flood War and saw the decimation of almost all remaining Forerunner forces just prior to the firing of the Halo Array during the Great Purification in 97,445 BCE.
~97,445 BCE
The behavior of the Ur-Didact following his encounter with a Gravemind and return to the Forerunner civilization became more erratic and harder for the IsoDidact and Librarian to cope with as the Forerunner-Flood War continued.
MODERN HISTORY
Though it is presumed the Librarian died during the Great Purification, her legacy lived on through imprints of her consciousness scattered throughout the galaxy. The first known encounter with one was on Requiem, when John-117 interacted with an imprint that shed light on the history of the Forerunners, the Didact, and performed an unknown change to the Master Chief in order to have him survive the pulse from a Composer. Another imprint was discovered on Mount Kilimanjaro in September 2557, when 343 Guilty Spark was in search of her and access to the Domain. While this request wasn’t granted, the Librarian did state she would collect all her imprints at the Absolute Record for the sake of helping humanity to uphold the Mantle of Responsibility.
The Requiem imprint was discovered again during the Requiem Campaign, and this time it provided Doctor Catherine Halsey with the Janus Key, a Forerunner device used to find the Absolute Record, which contained the location of every Forerunner site in the galaxy. The Janus Key became split in two during a fight between UNSC forces from the Infinity and Halsey, who was taken by Jul ‘Mdama. The Infinity spent the better part of 2557 trying to track down the other half of the key, eventually losing their half to ‘Mdama. Halsey and ‘Mdama, now with a complete Janus Key, traveled to the Absolute Record, where she interacted with another Librarian imprint that guided her inside the chamber.
The Battle of Requiem was a conflict between former Covenant forces under the command of Jul 'Mdama, UNSC forces from the UNSC Infinity and Forward unto Dawn, and Promethean forces under command of the Ur-Didact on Forerunner Shield World 0001, also known as Requiem, in July 2557.
The Mission to Mount Kilimanjaro was a trek undertaken by 343 Guilty Spark, Rion Forge, and the crew of the Ace of Spades to find the Librarian and, in the case of Spark, gain access to the Domain in September 2557.
The Requiem Campaign was a UNSC mission to return to Requiem, and take control of the shield world away from Jul 'Mdama and his Covenant remnants in February 2558, six months after the Battle of Requiem.
Operation: ATHENA was a covert UNSC mission to infiltrate the Song of Retribution, and retrieve the Janus Key from Jul 'Mdama and his Covenant remnant forces in September 2558.
The discovery of Bastion was the culmination of a series of events involving 343 Guilty Spark and Rion Forge that led to the discovery of the Librarian’s shield world.
